The Model Masterclass of May 2024 was an absolute success! We brought together stunning locations, high-end fashion, and an unforgettable Moroccan experience. This edition was especially exciting, featuring five diverse models and a stylist from the Netherlands, each with their own unique style and background. From our detailed planning to the incredible cultural immersion and flawless photoshoots, it was a week full of energy, creativity, and unforgettable moments.
PREPARATIONS // Creating the Vision
For this edition, we welcomed five talented model participants: Luan (Vietnamese), Rianne and Maarten (Dutch), Rafi’Noa (Indonesian), and Alessio (Italian). They were styled by stylists Sanaa and Karima, who worked closely from the beginning. We developed several moodboards to capture the essence of each shoot, booked locations that fit our vision, and ensured the styling was on point.
We organized a fitting session before the trip to plan out every look for each model, which also served as a day for the models to meet the team and each other, providing important information about the shoot.
Our team worked meticulously prior to this trip, finalizing schedules so that the models could focus solely on the experience without worrying about logistics. It was important to us that the Masterclass felt more than just work; we wanted the models to truly experience Morocco—both its traditional charm and its luxurious side. So, we carefully crafted an itinerary that included restaurants, excursions, and a rich cultural experience that fit seamlessly into our shoot schedule.
ARRIVAL
The team arrived early to prepare the stunning Riad La Perle d’Orane, our base for the Masterclass. This gorgeous riad, blending traditional Moroccan elements with a modern touch, became our home for the week. With its open courtyard, beautiful rooftop, hammam, jacuzzi, and four rooms, it was the perfect luxurious setting to unwind, prepare for the shoots, and serve as an ideal backdrop for our photography.
On the day of arrival, we prepared the riad and even squeezed in a quick photoshoot with Moroccan model Khadija, featuring a golden dress and hairstyling and make-up by Badr. Afterwards, we enjoyed a fantastic dinner at the rustic Petanque Social Club in their beautiful garden, marking the start of an exciting week.
Later that night, the models flew in from the Netherlands, and we welcomed them with drinks and snacks before letting them rest for the next day’s adventures.
DAY 1
Shoot Day 1: Exploring the Medina and Shooting ‘Eclectic’
The first day started with a delicious Moroccan breakfast, complete with Rgaifa, Baghrir (Moroccan type of pancakes), tea, fresh orange juice, and more, enjoyed in the riad’s serene courtyard. Afterward, we took a short stroll through a section of the old medina, where the models experienced the vibrant and chaotic charm of Marrakech for the first time. The energy of the city, with its bustling streets and dynamic atmosphere, was something they found fascinating, though it took some getting used to!
We returned to the riad to begin preparations for the shoot. The talented Moroccan-based hairstylist and makeup artist Oumayma worked with the models while Karima prepped the outfits. Photographers Lahcen and Amrani led the shoot, with a well-organized schedule ensuring everything ran smoothly.
The first shoot locations were carefully chosen in and around the riad, utilizing the warm terracotta tones of the old medina’s walls. The natural light, especially as it turned golden in the late afternoon, created stunning contrasts with the vibrant outfits and dynamic poses of the models. We broke for lunch, enjoying traditional Moroccan dishes like tajine and couscous, before continuing with the shoot.
The day was long but incredibly rewarding, with the entire team working together to create beautiful, vibrant shots that perfectly captured the essence of the Masterclass. Once the work was done, we cleaned up and got ready for dinner at Le Jardin, a unique garden restaurant known for its green interior, lush greenery and iconic turtle that roams around the space. The magical evening ended with drinks at the iconic Comptoir, where we celebrated the success of the first day.
The first day set the tone for an unforgettable week of creativity, exploration, and collaboration in one of the world’s most inspiring cities.
DAY 2
After a busy first day of shooting, the second day of our Model Masterclass was all about relaxation and luxury. We had planned some well-deserved downtime for our models, and thanks to a dear friend of ours—an influential entrepreneur with a jaw-dropping villa outside the city—we were invited to spend the day unwinding by his pool and enjoying a lavish lunch prepared by his private chef. This villa is not just any home; it’s a stunning oasis surrounded by nature, complete with mountain views, palm trees, and high-end, tasteful decor that exudes luxury at every corner.
Morning at the Riad
We began the day with a late breakfast at our beautiful riad. The sunlight streaming through the open courtyard set a serene tone as we reflected on the success of the first day’s shoot. Over Moroccan tea and pancakes, we revealed the day’s plans: a mix of luxury, relaxation, and a visit to one of Marrakech’s most iconic gardens. The models were buzzing with excitement, eager to spend the day at such a stunning mansion, soaking up the sun and bonding in a carefree atmosphere.
Exploring Le Jardin Secret
Before heading to the villa, we made a stop at Le Jardin Secret, a breathtaking 19th-century palace complex with traditional Islamic gardens. The models embraced their inner tourists, wandering through the elegant pathways, taking pictures, and soaking in the peaceful energy of the garden. The intricate architecture and lush greenery made this an ideal spot to relax and capture the beauty of Marrakech’s hidden gems.
A Day of Luxury at the Villa
We had arranged a bus to take us to our friend’s spectacular villa, located just outside the city, nestled in nature with a backdrop of mountains. As we arrived, we were welcomed like royalty, and the moment we stepped inside, it felt like all our stress melted away. The villa’s grandeur was overwhelming—two buildings, one styled in high-end contemporary luxury with French balconies and rooms filled with modern art, and the other more rustic yet equally exquisite with traditional Moroccan craftsmanship and antique details.
The poolside was an oasis of tranquility, with palm trees swaying in the breeze, a stone oven reminiscent of ancient Arab traditions, and a rooftop jacuzzi with stunning views. Our models spent the afternoon swimming and lounging by the pool, fully immersed in the villa’s peaceful ambiance. Although we promised them a carefree day, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to capture some stunning images in such a breathtaking setting. We’d prepared some outfits, and one by one, we styled the models for low-key, relaxed photoshoots that perfectly complemented the mood of the day.
A Tour of Luxury and Tradition
After a leisurely swim and some delicious Moroccan pastries, our friend gave us a tour of the villa’s newest addition—a rustic yet luxurious building adorned with traditional Moroccan doors, natural materials, and intricate details. The rooftop lounge, complete with a jacuzzi and panoramic views, overlooked the lush garden and pool area. This villa was truly a dream, featuring a pool house, a canopied bed, a party bar, and even a music recording studio in the event space. Every detail was thoughtfully designed to offer both luxury and tradition, making it the perfect place for high-end events and intimate gatherings.
An Exquisite Lunch
The highlight of the day was the lunch prepared by the villa’s talented cooking staff. A stunning fusion of Indian and Moroccan cuisine was laid out on a beautifully adorned table, featuring an array of flavors and dishes that left us in awe. After the meal, the models returned to the pool, refreshed and ready for a few more relaxed shoots before we wrapped up the day. As evening approached, we said our goodbyes, grateful for the hospitality and the experience.
To cap off a day full of relaxation, we headed to the iconic Buddha Bar for drinks, where we toasted to the success of the day and the incredible experiences shared.
DAY 3
A Packed Day of Shooting at Studio 22 & Camel Rides in Agafay Desert
After a day of relaxation, it was time to get back to work. Today was a full day of shooting with a strict schedule, and we were ready for a productive but intense session. With Sanaa leading the creative vision, we booked Studio 22, an indoor/outdoor studio situated in the midst of a sustainable ecolodge under construction. The lodge is a passion project of the owner, who is dedicated to self-sustainability—everything is grown in their garden, the walls are made of rammed earth, and the entire space is powered by solar panels. It was the perfect backdrop for a day that would require focus, flexibility, and creativity.
Shooting Day Begins
The day was packed with multiple shoots, fittings, hair and makeup, and tight planning to ensure every look was captured on schedule. This was a challenging but realistic introduction for the models to the fast-paced fashion industry, mirroring the hectic nature of fashion shows and high-demand productions.
As Karima carefully prepared the styling, Badr worked on hair and makeup for the models. Meanwhile, Amrani and Lahcen scouted the perfect spots for the shoots, ensuring that each look was aligned with the mood we’d set for the day.
•Rianne shot two styles today: one featuring elegant haute couture dresses with Lahcen, and another showcasing traditional Moroccan caftans with Amrani.
•The boys also shot two styles. Amrani photographed them in colorful summer casualwear by the Italian brand Valenza, while Lahcen captured them in bold raw denim looks.
Despite the fast pace and the stress of sticking to the schedule, the team worked seamlessly, giving the models a glimpse of what high-pressure productions in the industry feel like.
A Sustainable Lunch at Studio 22
Around 1 p.m., we took a well-deserved break for lunch, and Studio 22 didn’t disappoint. Their Moroccan chef provided a delicious, healthy spread made entirely from ingredients grown in their garden. From vegetable tajine to lemongrass-infused iced herbal tea, the meal was not only refreshing but perfectly aligned with the studio’s eco-friendly ethos.
Camel Rides in the Agafay Desert
Once the shooting wrapped up, we packed all the styling and equipment, said our goodbyes, and headed off for a special evening excursion we had planned. Our chauffeur drove us to the Agafay Desert, where we had arranged a unique experience for the models: a camel ride in the heart of the desert.
Upon arrival, the models were dressed in traditional Moroccan nomadic outfits, complete with cobalt blue turbans. The peaceful desert surroundings offered a stunning contrast to the bustling city life we had left behind. The camel ride, which lasted about an hour, allowed us to fully take in the serene quiet, with only the gentle breeze and the golden sun hanging in the late afternoon sky. It was a moment of tranquility after an intense day of shooting.
We took some group pictures to capture the magic of the moment, then returned to our riad, feeling exhausted but completely fulfilled by the day’s achievements.
DAY 4
Final Day of Exploration and Relaxation in Marrakech
The last day in Morocco for our models was one of well-deserved rest and quiet reflection. After a dynamic and packed schedule filled with new experiences, buzzing city life, and long shooting days, the models were understandably exhausted—but deeply inspired by everything they’d been a part of.
We wanted them to have the day for themselves, so after breakfast, we headed to Dar El Bacha, also known as the “Palace of the Pasha.” Built in 1910, this grand palace was once the residence of Thami El Glaoui, a powerful figure in Moroccan history. The palace itself is a stunning blend of intricate Moroccan craftsmanship, with zellige tilework, cedarwood ceilings, and lush gardens that offer a peaceful retreat from the busy streets of Marrakech.
Dar El Bacha is now a museum, but we were particularly excited about visiting its high-end coffee room, Bacha Coffee, known for its exclusive selection of 100% Arabica coffee from 35 different countries. While we waited for our table—often an hour-and-a-half wait—we explored the palace and its historical artifacts. The gardens provided a serene backdrop for quiet conversations, and the models enjoyed the chance to soak in Morocco’s cultural richness.
The coffee room was impeccably designed, with vibrant orange and gold elements, and a flood of natural sunlight coming through a glass ceiling. The menu was a work of art, with detailed descriptions of the coffees and beautiful historical photographs, offering an experience as rich as the coffee itself. We treated ourselves to exquisite French pastries, made with only the finest ingredients—desserts that felt like something you’d only find in Paris.
The models, too, were entranced by the atmosphere, but as the afternoon wore on, we could see they needed some time alone. The pace of the trip had been intense, and they hadn’t had much time to fully enjoy all that Marrakech, or even our riad, had to offer. So we encouraged them to take the afternoon to wander the city, relax on the rooftop, or unwind in the jacuzzi. This was their moment to recharge before flying back the next day.
As the Model Masterclass came to a close, the models left with not only stunning portfolios but unforgettable memories and valuable insights into the world of fashion photography!
